Buzz: Dawn Richard Announces The Black Era

17 Jun

First of all, let me just say how excited I am!!! The mother of the HEARTS Dawn Richard has made an announcement that The Black Era kicks off October 7th, 2013! The BlackHeart album is the second installment of Dawn’s trilogy following the first release GoldenHeart, which landed on Billboard’s Top 10 R&B Album chart!

“It’s kind of the realization that the music industry isn’t as great a lover as I thought it would be. So the fall is a bit more harsh. Whatever GoldenHeart was, where I came in whimsical and it was a bit more dreamy, BlackHeart is way more real, way more harsh, and way more brutal. And we’ve gained that in sound. I love it because it’s way more club-friendly and way more aggressive in the lyrics. This might be my more commercial album out of all of the albums that I do, but it’ll never really take away from the sound that I’ve created with my team.”

With BlackHeart, I think people are going to realize that the fall isn’t as sweet as you would think it is. When you fall and hit rock bottom, that aggression and that rock bottom is a whole different type of sound. We’re going to play with a lot of synth and a lot of EDM this time around.” The lyrics to BlackHeart, like I said, are a bit brutal. It’s way more honest and way more raw. So things are less decoded and less poetic, and more real and more relatable for people to understand. The sounds and the drums and 808s are way harsher and way heavier. We’re laying on that 808 this time, whereas in GoldenHeart the snare and the claps were leading the album. It was very top snare heavy. BlackHeart will be way more 808-heavy.”

Get ready HEARTS!!!

Toy’s Treasure Chest: ’86

18 May

dawn-richard-86You guys have no idea how hard it was for me to refrain from clapping my hands or snapping my fingers during this recording session because that’s how much I really LOVE this song! Dawn Richard is a force! As you know I’ve been raving about her for some time now & I just felt it was time for me to cover one of her magnificent songs from her solo debut LP, Goldenheart. Let me just say how much I adore her for what she’s doing, especially because she’s in to taking chances & not conforming her art & she did all of this as an independent artist! The song ’86 touched me the first time I heard it. I love the retro 80s vibe & how Dawn delivers vocally on the song. Clearly I have a muse to focus on for this vocal. This is Toy Taha! Press play…

New Song: Dawn Richard “Bum Bum”

14 Mar

Dawn Richard gets eclectic with “Bum Bum.” Originally slated for her Goldenheart album, the song finds the singer sassy and sexy.

The track, which details a guy trying to get Dawn’s attention, takes inspiration from Dawn’s Haitian and New Orleans roots. “Bum Bum” samples the New Orleans favorite “Iko Iko” and Sister Nancy’s reggae hit “Bam Bam.” “Body like a felony, he wanna cuff me!” she brashly sings.

“Bum Bum” was produced and written by Druski, who’s work is featured heavily on Goldenheart.

The singer is currently headlining her Goldenheart Tour, with dates at Yoshi’s in San Francisco on March 20th and the Roxy in Los Angeles on March 26th. During time away from the stage, she’s working on her second solo album, Blackheart. Listen here… Continue reading

New Song: Dawn Richard “NLX”

2 Feb

Dawn Richard’s “Goldenheart” is a futuristic, frequently danceable R&B album that’s already setting a high bar for the genre in 2013. The album melds soaring, ethereal vocals with genre-bending beats and frequent military references to inspire Richard’s fans (“Hearts,” as she calls them) to conquer any obstacle in their path. The album debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and the Billboard 200 at No. 137 last week with sales of 3,000 copies no small feat for a self-release, and even more impressive when Richard talks about the alternate path she could have taken with a label.

A veteran of two high-profile R&B groups at the age of 25, Richard first came to fame as a member of MTV’s “Making The Band” girl group Danity Kane and later partnered with the group’s mentor Diddy as a member of Diddy Dirty Money, lending verses and sharing hook duties on many of the tracks on 2010′s “Last Train To Paris.” But when it came time to pursuing a solo project with Bad Boy, Richard was told she’d have to wait as long as three, maybe even four years before anything could reach the public.
