May is observed as Mental Health Awareness month by those in the mental health care field. Mental health care professionals reach out to those suffering from mental health issues throughout this month through events in their communities to observe Mental Health Awareness. Roseann Bennett, LFMT, has reached out to hundreds of clients about their mental health over the years during and not during Mental Health Awareness month. Bennett also proved her ability to manage as an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Supervisor and ACS supervisor, as well as being the president for the New Jersey Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
Roseann Bennett treats married couples who are often on the brink of separation or about to divorce. A large number of the people she treats often have depression as the main cause for the problems within their relationship.
Roseann Bennett says that from her observances on couples, depression that one partner is struggling with will ultimately begin to impact the other partner. About 15 million adults have depression in the United States. Roseann Bennett believes that the only reason why depression can negatively impact a relationship that far is when it’s left untreated. It’s also not often that a couple will say upfront that one of them is depressed. They typically just have a partner becoming withdrawn and distant which leads to cheating, anger issues, or financial insecurity issues with the relationship. Getting help is important if a couple wants to make their relationship work out. The individual with depression should see a mental health care professional in whatever capacity makes them more comfortable. Perhaps both partners can go see the mental health care provider, or the one with depression may prefer going alone. The couples that will ultimately stay together -despite a struggle with depression- are the ones who talk to each other about it. The ones who try to learn more from each other and from other resources about how depression is affecting their relationship. See This Page for additional information.
