22-year-old KR isn’t your typical rapper / songwriter. Born and raised in a nondescript town in the heart of the Midlands, he spent his teenage years producing hip hop music on a crude home studio set up, landing his first publishing deal at 18 years of age and remixing & producing for the likes of Lil Wayne, Professor Green, Just Jack, Masta Ace, Skinnyman and Shade Sheist from his bedroom. At a time when chart topping UK urban music was still in it’s infancy, KR earned his stripes as a respected producer and vocalist in hip hop circles on both sides of the Atlantic.
Now inspired by the likes of Thom Yorke, Mike Skinner, MJ Cole and Jamie XX, and backed by a soundscape of underground bass music and future garage, KR’s upfront style and honest social commentary tells the story of every day life in Britian in 2013.
“She” is the latest video release from KR, and features Eagle For Hands’ superb remix of Laura Mvula’s cult hit as the perfect backdrop for his unique brand of straightforward lyricism.

Every now and again I like to cover something really unexpected! As stated before, I listen to every genre and acoustic is probably my favorite next to jazz music. There are times I just want to sing with a piano & nothing more, so this song was perfect to give my rendition I always sing around the house. This is one of my most favorite songs by A Fine Frenzy, which was actually the first single from the debut LP, One Cell in the Sea. It’s enchanting and very haunting at the same time. I’ve always been a fan of Alison Sudol’s vocals since 2007 and I really love the color & quality in her voice, so I borrowed from that for this cover while keeping my signature sound too. The track was beautifully written & composed! “We walked along a crowded street / you took my hand and danced with me / images / And when you left you kissed my lips / you told me you would never ever forget these / images,” sings Sudol. “Almost Lover” is an emotional ballad that reflects on the past & anyone can relate to it, if they’ve had hopes for a relationship and it just didn’t work out the way they envisioned it. Los Angeles-based singer Raquel Rodriguez and her band, The Big Guys, play soul how it was meant to be played! Their 2013 full-length debut Miss Me boasts a collection of impassioned, invigorating, and irresistible songs that are as fresh as they are fiery.
Raquel just premiered the new music video for “Tell Me It’s Fine,” which paints a poignant picture via vivid lyrics and the music’s sultry swing. “It’s about a relationship where both people are really stubborn. Neither side wants to end it so they stick it out, stay together, and just hope that it’s fine,” states Rodriguez.
I really love what she’s doing! The visual is so dreamy and I love that the director Jay Ahn shot in color & in black-and-white, which makes the production feel classic and nostalgic…befitting of the track. I clearly hear elements of the Jackson 5 and Alicia Keys in “Tell Me It’s Fine,” but does not stray from who Rodriguez is as an artist. LOVE this!

Slip-N-Slide Records singer/songwriter/musician Sebastian Mikael is proud to present “Last Night” featuring Wale. The seductive, expertly-crafted R&B gem serves as the lead single off his forthcoming debut EP.
When it came time to choose a collaborator, Sebastian knew Wale was the man for the job. “I felt that Wale would kill it. It just had that vibe and I thought it would be a perfect fit,” he explained. “I didn’t think it could actually happen, but he ended up listening to the song and thought it was dope. [He] sent back his verses a few hours later.”
Most recently, the classically trained recording artist has been hard at work recording with A-list producers including Rico Love, Jim Jonsin, The Elev3n, and Rodney Jerkins. Due out this fall, the yet-to-be-titled EP will showcase the full spectrum of Sebastian’s adept musicianship and genuine talent.
Born in Sweden to a Swedish feather and an Ethiopian mother, Sebastian Mikael grew up in a diverse household immersed in music, fashion, and art. In 2008, he moved from Sweden to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute before continuing his studies at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. While a student at Berklee, he was signed by Slip-N-Slide Records CEO Ted Lucas and in late 2011, he released his first mixtape, J’Adore, which received rave reviews from his steadily growing fan base.
Meet JC Villafan! The 21-year-old soul singer-songwriter dedicated himself fully to his career by touring Europe (France, UK, Belgium) for 6 months with an acoustic guitar in one hand and a suitcase in the other. His debut EP “Sweet Time” was released in November 2012 and has been critically acclaimed by international press, leading to a nomination at the LA Music Critic Awards in the “Best EP of the Year” category.
Bob Leggett at the Examiner.com wrote “His voice is as smooth as James Taylor while his stage presence rivals that of artists twice his age. JC plays to win, and the result is a first class performer with top-notch songs. JC is truly an artist on the rise.”
METY loves this record! We believe JC is definitely on his way with his sultry, smooth sound and delivery. Watch the official video for the title-track “Sweet Time” below…
You guys have no idea how hard it was for me to refrain from clapping my hands or snapping my fingers during this recording session because that’s how much I really LOVE this song! Dawn Richard is a force! As you know I’ve been raving about her for some time now & I just felt it was time for me to cover one of her magnificent songs from her solo debut LP, Goldenheart. Let me just say how much I adore her for what she’s doing, especially because she’s in to taking chances & not conforming her art & she did all of this as an independent artist! The song ’86 touched me the first time I heard it. I love the retro 80s vibe & how Dawn delivers vocally on the song. Clearly I have a muse to focus on for this vocal. This is Toy Taha! Press play…
Off of my upcoming EP, I Am Woman… Here is the second official single entitled, “Memories” featuring Nightmeer. This time around, I wanted texture, so I chose a piece that incorporated live instrumentation with the congas and horns, which I’ve always been a big fan of, but I still wanted to keep elements of hip-hop & soul. When I wrote the song I wanted the verses to be simplistic and melodically fluid in contrast to the pre-hook that I perform staccato. It’s basically about being strong enough to overcome a situation that isn’t good for you and even though, you are vulnerable because of the memories, you allow yourself to move on and not remain stuck in love. This is Toy Taha! Listen below…
Released 09 May 2013
Written & Arranged by Toy Taha; Lead & Background Vocals by Toy Taha; Rap Section Written & Performed by Nightmeer; Produced by Serious for Serious Productions; Additional Production by Toy Taha for Face Music Entertainment; Recorded & Mixed by Nightmeer for Out of Orda Studio Productions

This is the very first time I’ve featured a rap artist on the YouTube Sirens column, so you should know this artist is special! I haven’t had much time lately to find new talent because I’ve been really busy composing my music for my new project coming soon, however, on my down time I went to YouTube to watch Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” video and then, I found Propane. I was not expecting this, but he was so good, I probably watched this video 5 times in a row, LOL. If you’ve never heard of him, you’ll feel like you have been missing out once you watch his “Suit & Tie” cover. He raps, he sings and has amazing delivery. Check him out! Love isn’t the only thing to sing about, and Jarell Perry proves this on his debut solo full-length, Simple Things, produced by Hassan—which is out today.
The LA-based singer/songwriter, who has collaborated with everyone from Fat Joe and Usher to Diplo and Rusko, certainly knows how to belt out the stomach-punch emotional resonance of love gone wrong, but he also spins yarn around a modern existence that includes mundane day jobs and the highs (and lows) of a good glass of whiskey.
After the success of singles “Happy 4 U,” featuring Thurz, and the soaring emotional storm “Getaway” (which Perry performed live on Mark Cuban and Ryan Seacrest’s AXS Live! here), Simple Things is hotly anticipated. While grounded in alternative R&B, Simple Things tours through Perry’s many influences, including indie-acoustic, dubstep and chill-wave. Also on the record are two bonus tracks: “First Time,” Perry’s collaboration with Nacho Picasso, Locksmith and Torae, and his Semi Precious Weapons cover song, “Aviation High.”
This is just the beginning of a big year for the multi-faceted, multi-talented artist. Jarell Perry has been working on music with Thurz, Cadence Weapon and hip-hop pioneer Cormega that will see the light of day in 2013. It’s enough to make someone fall in love—and then write a song about it.
