New Song: Alicia Keys “New Day”
28 JunSinger/Pianist Alicia Keys dropped a sizzling summer jam today entitled, “New Day,” off of her upcoming fifth album, which is the follow up to 2009′s The Element of Freedom. “When it comes to sharing this music with you, I am like a caged animal that’s dying to escape,” says Keys. In explanation of the new direction she’s taking with this project, she replied, “It’s like I’m a different person, a new person. Everything is new, from being married and having a baby, and what that’s done for me in just giving me a sense of real stability, real connection, grounding, reason, and purpose. So much of the music that you’re going to hear is talking about what that feels like, what we’re all going through, all of us … That empowerment, that freedom is definitely something that’s reflected in this album.” Produced by her husband Swizz Beatz…press play! New Video: Lana Del Rey ft. A$AP Rocky “National Anthem”
28 JunArtist Lana Del Rey released a thought-provoking, patriotic video for her latest single “National Anthem.” Joined by rapper A$AP Rocky as President John F. Kennedy, Lana acts as his wife Jackie Onassis and the video takes us on a journey of their love story, as well as, the re-enactment of JFK’s assassination in 1963. The visuals were directed by Anthony Mandler, who recently spoke about the making of and concept stating, “You see why I held back on talking about it; I didn’t want to spoil anything. Anytime you’re dealing with the American Camelot of the Kennedys, you’re dealing with a packed powder keg,” he said. “And really, what Lana was trying to do — this was her concept, she came to me with it, and I kind of dug it out with her — was really look and explore an archetype; just like Shakespeare wrote ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and that became the archetype of the forbidden love story.”
“And I think the Kennedy relationship, certainly the triangle of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O and Jack Kennedy, became this kind of ideal of what seemed perfect from the outside was maybe rotting from the inside,” he continued. “And Lana was really interested in exploring this loss of innocence, this idea that what you think you’re experiencing is maybe not what it’s always going to be. Because when you say ‘Kennedy,’ that immediately evokes something, just like when I say ‘It’s a Romeo and Juliet story.’ So I think using that power, that pedigree of the story is a really fascinating place to show the loss of something, the breakdown of something.”
“We used the Kennedy framework to kind of implement this new Camelot, this racially diverse Camelot, this maybe socially diverse Camelot … bringing it into the modern era, but still keeping that classic framework,” he explained. “There’s a kind of micro-commentary of ‘This is the new royalty,’ you know, A$AP and Lana, trying to pick two people to maybe represent the next generation of something. I think even with an African American president, it’s still controversial to see him sitting and playing JFK, it’s still taboo, even if it shouldn’t be. You’re kind of like ‘Is this right or wrong? This feels very right, but also feels very wrong at the same time.’ And I think in all of Lana’s songs, and her image in general, and the person she is, it all fits in. It’s kind of like there are two sides of a mirror, and you’re not sure which side you’re looking at.”
“We didn’t want it to be a mockery. How many artists and rappers and singers have you seen running around in badly fitted suits, acting like the president? And I think it may have worked with other people to mock, but that was not what we wanted; we want this to be very serious,” he said. “The whole movie kind of hedges on the gunshot, it hedges on that close-up of the hand when the gunshot happens, and you don’t see anything violent. What you’re used to seeing with the Zapruder film, is this very kind of violent, destructive act; I didn’t want to go anywhere near that.
“It was never about re-creating a death scene, it was always about the person sitting next to him,” he continued. “It was always about seeing it through her eyes, seeing this kind of castle crumble in the moment, and that shot where she’s coming up out of the car, and the pain in her eyes, that destruction, it’s like the whole castle is crumbling around her. That’s what we were going for.” Watch the cinematic clip below… Continue reading
Emerging Artist: Kimbra
27 JunUp and coming artist out of New Zealand, musician Kimbra is stepping out and ready to make her mark on the music world. I just LOVE the rawness and intricacies of her voice. She has been compared to artists such as: Architecture in Helsinki, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, Katy Perry, Florence + the Machine, Meiko, and Björk. To me, Kimbra’s style is an eclectic musical gumbo of jazz, alternative and soul. Her songs are melodic and so infectious. In an interview with American Songwriter, she listed Daniel Johns, Prince, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Jackson, Minnie Ripperton, and Stevie Wonder as her influences. Recently, Kimbra gave an in-studio performance of three of her tracks (Withdraw, Two Way Street and Settle Down) for Billboard, off of her debut album Vows. Watch below!

New Video: Tamia “Beautiful Surpise”
27 Jun
One of my favorite singers Tamia is finally back with a new video for her first single “Beautiful Surprise” from her upcoming fifth studio album. The classic visuals were shot in Malibu, and feature a cameo from her husband of 13 years, NBA star Grant Hill. “The video’s gonna be filled with a lot of beautiful, editorial-type fashion and vignettes. The concept is this really beautiful performance and she’s kind of directing it towards Grant Hill, who’s her husband. He comes in and out of the video like a dreamlike fantasy,” said director Ryan Pallotta. “After 15 years I got to work with my husband, so not a lot of acting there,” joked Tamia, who will release her album of the same name in August 2012. “He was making me laugh when we’re supposed to be serious.” Watch the visuals here…

New Video: Katy Perry “Wide Awake”
24 Jun
Pop artist Katy Perry dropped her latest video “Wide Awake,” which she stated, “I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. There’s good parts; there’s bad parts. Of course, there has been a lot of things that went on last year that I had to get through and overcome. I think what probably kept me going is just the purity of my belief in music. I love this song so much. It was a song that I hadn’t written for Teenage Dream. I was doing this movie and they asked me if I wanted to write an end-title song for the movie and I was like, ‘I know exactly what I want to say.’ I was really kind of dying to write another song at that point. I didn’t want to wait until I did a whole new record, and it’s kind of the perfect last word of me at this moment.” Watch below…
