27 Apr

R&B singer Brandy has finally unveiled her first single entitled, “Put It Down” featuring Chris Brown, from her forthcoming sixth studio LP Two Eleven, slated for July release. Produced by Bangladesh and written by Sean Garrett. The new album will feature collaborations with Timbaland, Mario Winans, Danja, Hit-Boy, Noah “40” Shebib, Rico Love, Ester Dean, Frank Ocean and more. This is definitely a different style for Bran, but I’m feeling it and can’t hardly what to see what else she’s ready to unleash. Listen here…

New Song: Usher “Scream”

27 Apr

Usher just dropped his second official single, “Scream” off of the upcoming album Looking For Myself. I figured he would return to dance tracks, however I am hoping for more R&B on this album because I love the first single “Climax” so much. Usher always brings it and this song would be great for his live performances. Listen here…

New Song: Nas “Daughters”

27 Apr

Hip-hop legend Nas never disappoints. Here is his latest track “Daughters,” which is scheduled to appear on his upcoming 10th studio release Life is Good, in stores July 17th. Nas recently stated, “It’s been a long time, it’s been five years since I released a studio album, solo album; so this record is everything. This is everything that I’ve got to say—I guess you’ve got to live a little and you put that in your music, so it’s coming from my life.” I am so ready for this album to drop, I feel like he’s back in beast mode! Throwback of the Day: Queen Latifah

27 Apr

There have only been a few female emcees that I really felt and loved all of their music and Queen Latifah is definitely at the top of my list. When she did rhyme, I always felt there was purpose in her music. “Just Another Day” is one of my most favorite songs that she wrote. The track comes from one of her most successful albums to date Black Reign, which she dedicated to her late brother, who loss his life in a motorcycle accident. Queen had guilt that spiraled into depression because she purchased the motorcycle for her brother and I believe the mental state she was in, created this great album. For me creatively, it was one of her best albums, she was the only emcee who had this particular sound that bridged hip-hop and jazz elements with actual instruments over the tracks. She was also one of the first to sing and rap in her songs. No one flowed over a track and delivered like Queen! Press play! {Disclaimer: The following audio is explicit}

New Song: Maxine Ashley ft. Lil Wayne “Hot Thing”

27 Apr

Newcomer Maxine Ashley has been molded under producer Pharrell’s guidance and now she is ready to show what she’s about on her new single “Hot Thing.” She enlisted a few bars from YMCMB’s Lil Wayne and added some of her own on the uptempo track. Listen here…

New Video: Ledisi “Bravo”

25 Apr

Soul singer Ledisi returns with the visuals for “Bravo,” off of her fifth studio album Pieces Of Me. Directed by Erica D. Hayes of Fig Street Films, the video is an uplifting clip displaying stereotypes and negative labels that some people may judge a person by at first glance, even though they do not know who they really are. It was touching to me and I loved the concept. Watch here…

Please go and get it! From the album, here are two new tracks entitled, “Lost” and “Just Me.” I am loving the entire vibe of the album, but I have been running a few songs that immediately. New Video: Kendra Moriis “If You Didn’t Go”

25 Apr

Singer-songwriter Kendra Morris drops her new video for “If You Didn’t Go” and I just love the chorus, I can’t stop singing it! It’s so reminiscent of 70s music. In the clip, Morris goes through make-ups and break-ups with her man and everything surrounding has a vintage feel. Watch now!

New Video: Jill Scott “Blessed”

24 Apr

Soul singer Jill Scott has dropped the visual for “Blessed,” which is one of my favorite tracks from her most recent album The Light of the Sun.  I love the message of the song, as well as, the clip where Jill is backed by background singers as a nod to the “Pips” and she’s rocking a flattering dress. Looks like she really had a good time shooting the video and I loved the Muppets.  Watch here…

Behind the Scenes: LeToya Luckett’s Webisode Part 3

24 Apr

Singer LeToya Luckett returns with part 3 of her “Life, Love & Music” webisode series, which gives an inside look on her family life, appearances and behind the scenes process of creating her third solo album. On this episode, LeToya attends a charity event for T.D. Jakes, enjoys time with her grandmother who has been diagnosed with dementia, has a photo shoot, meets with her acting coach and chats with her producers to express her determination and focus with the upcoming project. I love LeToya’s personality, she appears to be really down-to-earth, humble and sweet. Watch now!

New Video: Melanie Fiona “Watch Me Work”

24 Apr

Singer Melanie Fiona released her latest video “Watch Me Work” from her sophomore album The MF Life, which is an empowerment visual including takes from vintage movies. It was great to see legendary clips featuring actresses such as Pam Grier, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Angela Bassett, Demi Moore and others added in the video. Personally, I would have liked to see more of Fiona since this was her song, but it was a nice depiction of strong women in film…watch here! {Disclaimer: The following audio is explicit}

Album Review: SWV “I Missed US”

23 Apr

Artist: SWV
Album: I Missed Us
Released on: April 17, 2012

In 1992, SWV were signed by producer Teddy Riley and set out to take the R&B world by storm with their debut It’s About Time, which was certified triple platinum. The third single “Weak” from the debut was the group’s first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as, the R&B chart and will go down in history as one of the best songs of the 90s. Now back with their fourth studio album and first release in fifteen years I Missed Us via Mass Appeal Entertainment.

The album kicks off with “Co-Sign” and I felt it was a good opening single. When I first heard the track, I thought SWV had not missed a beat. The arrangement, the vocals and the melody were all signature elements of SWV’s sound. Also, I was really glad to hear lead vocals from Lelee this time around. The next track “All About You” flowed in effortlessly. The song really made me remember the 90s basement parties I had. With Fat Man Scoop being the hype man of the track, the song really felt as if they had a party session in studio. The vocals were really nice and I love that the track contained an interpolation of one of my favorite songs ever “Peter Piper” by Run DMC. On “Show Off” the ladies displayed that they can still hang with today’s generation. Sonically, the track is modern, yet still contains their classic sound. The verses are started with the lyrics of “Come and Talk to Me” by Jodeci and the formula reminds me of Beyoncé’s ”Party.” With “Everything I Love,” the ladies of SWV sing to the men in their lives vowing to be there through any trials that may come and I love the bridge section where Coko showed off her upper register and of course, incorporated some of her traditional riffs and runs.

“Do Ya” featuring Brianna Perry is another uptempo on the album. I could have actually taken the song without the rap because I did not feel it made the track any better. I loved the horns, but overall, this is the only song on I Missed Us that I felt was ill-fitting. With “The Best Years,” production was lacking, as well as, vocal dynamics, the song just seemed to be an album filler about being naive in love. However, the title-track “I Missed Us” was a standout moment on the album. I loved the track as soon as it began with the scats and the cadence on the verses. The song gave great nostalgia and reminded me of their previous album releases. Another favorite of mine that held the same momentum was “Better Than I.” The hard-hitting instrumental, harmonies, lead vocals by Coko and Taj’s rap made this track one of the very best on the album. Everything was completely in sync and I loved it.
